Phytoremediation Cleaning the Soil with Flowers

According to the International Phytotechnology Society website, phytotechnology is defined as the science of using plants to solve environmental problems such as pollution, reforestation, biofuels, and landfilling. Phytoremediation, a subcategory of phytotechnology, uses plants to absorb pollutants from soils or from water. The pollutants involved can include heavy metals, defined as any elements considered as a metal that may cause pollution or an environmental problem, and that cannot be further degraded. A high accumulation of heavy metals in a soil or water can be considered toxic to plants or animals. Why Use Phytoremediation? Other methodologies used to remediate soils polluted with heavy metals can cost $1 million US per acre, whereas phytoremediation was estimated to cost between 45 cents and $1.69 US per square foot, lowering the cost per acre to the tens of thousands of dollars. How Does Phytoremediation Work? Not every plant species can be used for phytoremediation. A plant that is able to take up more metals than normal plants is called a hyperaccumulator. Hyperaccumulators can absorb more heavy metals than is present in the soil in which they are growing. All plants need some heavy metals in small amounts; iron, copper, and manganese are just a few of the heavy metals which are essential to plant function. Also, there are plants that can tolerate a high amount of metals in their system, even more than they need for normal growth, instead of exhibiting toxicity symptoms. For example, a species of Thlaspi has a protein called a metal tolerance protein. Zinc is heavily taken up by Thlaspi due to the activation of a systemic zinc deficiency response. In other words, the metal tolerance protein tells the plant that it needs more zinc because it needs more, even if it doesnt, so it takes more up! Specialized metal transporters within a plant can assist in the uptake of heavy metals also. The transporters, which are specific to the heavy metal to which it binds, are proteins which assist in the transport, detoxification, and sequestration of heavy metals within plants. Microbes in the rhizosphere cling to the surface of plant roots, and some remediating microbes are able to break down organic materials such as petroleum and take heavy metals up and out of the soil. This benefits the microbes as well as the plant, as the process can provide a template and a food source for microbes that can degrade organic pollutants. The plants subsequently release root exudates, enzymes, and organic carbon for the microbes to feed upon. History Of Phytoremediation The godfather of phytoremediation and the study of hyperaccumulator plants may very well be R. R. Brooks of New Zealand. One of the first papers involving an unusually high level of heavy metal uptake in plants in a polluted ecosystem was written by Reeves and Brooks in 1983. They found that the concentration of lead in Thlaspi located in a mining area was easily the highest ever recorded for any flowering plant. Professor Brooks work on heavy metal hyperaccumulation by plants led to questions as to how this knowledge could be used to clean polluted soils. The first article on phytoremediation was written by scientists at Rutgers University about the use of specially-selected and engineered metal-accumulating plants used to clean polluted soils. In 1993, a United States patent was filed by a company called Phytotech. Titled Phytoremediation of Metals, the patent disclosed a method to remove metal ions from soil using plants. Several species of plants, including radish and mustard, were genetically engineered to express a protein called metallothionein. The plant protein binds heavy metals and removes them so that plant toxicity does not occur. Due to this technology, genetically engineered plants, including Arabidopsis, tobacco, canola, and rice have been modified to remediate areas contaminated with mercury. External Factors Affecting Phytoremediation The main factor affecting a plants ability to hyperaccumulate heavy metals is age. Young roots grow faster and take up nutrients at a higher rate than older roots, and age may also affect how the chemical contaminant moves throughout the plant. Naturally, the microbial populations in the root area affect the uptake of metals. Transpiration rates, due to sun/shade exposure and seasonal changes, can affect plant uptake of heavy metals as well. Plant Species Used For Phytoremediation Over 500 plant species are reported to have hyperaccumulation properties. Natural hyperaccumulators include Iberis intermedia and Thlaspi spp. Different plants accumulate different metals; for example, Brassica juncea accumulates copper, selenium, and nickel, whereas Arabidopsis halleri accumulates cadmium and Lemna gibba accumulates arsenic. Plants used in engineered wetlands include sedges, rushes, reeds, and cattails because they are flood tolerant and are able to uptake pollutants. Genetically engineered plants, including Arabidopsis, tobacco, canola, and rice, have been modified to remediate areas contaminated with mercury. How are plants tested for their hyperaccumulative abilities? Plant tissue cultures are used frequently in phytoremediation research, due to their ability to predict plant response and to save time and money. Marketability Of Phytoremediation Phytoremediation is popular in theory due to its low establishment cost and relative simplicity. In the 1990s, there were several companies working with phytoremediation, including Phytotech, PhytoWorks, and Earthcare. Other large companies such as Chevron and DuPont were also developing phytoremediation technologies. However, little work has been performed recently by the companies, and several of the smaller companies have gone out of business. Problems with the technology include the fact that plant roots cannot reach far enough into the soil core to accumulate some pollutants, and the disposal of the plants after hyperaccumulation has taken place. The plants cannot be plowed back into the soil, consumed by humans or animals, or put into a landfill. Dr. Brooks led pioneering work on the extraction of metals from hyperaccumulator plants. This process is called phytomining and involves the smelting of metals from the plants.

Cousin Kate and The Seduction Essay Example For Students

Cousin Kate and The Seduction Essay I am going to compare the two poems, Cousin Kate and The Seduction. In both poems, the main characters are female and single. In Cousin Kate the poet narrates is first person thus adopting the perspective of the young cottage maiden featured but in The Seduction the poet narrates in the third person and tells a story, however she does communicate with us the intimate thoughts and feelings of the schoolgirl. Cousin Kate begins by setting the scene and so does The Seduction. The girl in Cousin Kate has little or no education and yet seems to have a quite high standard of life whereas the girl in The Seduction is about to do her O Levels (G. C. S. E s) and seems under-educated with a poor quality of life. Eileen McAuley (author of The Seduction) uses idiomatic, conversational speech and is not governed by a rhyming scheme, although one is present. An example of her idiomatic speech would be She was three months gone An example of a rhyming scheme would be He spat into the river, fumbled in a bag nd he muttered little slag but on lines 30-32 a half-rhyme is found: Listerine Magazines. In both poems the poets begin by setting the scene and telling you what has happened previously (a short time beforehand) and both express vividly the emotions of the main characters. For example, in Cousin Kate, a 19th Century poem, we can pick up that the main character is bitter towards her cousin, Kate, through lines thirty seven and thirty eight: won me with his love nor bought me with his land. This could also suggest jealousy, that Kate has a lot of land and she does not, or that Kate is loved, and she is not. Cousin Kate was written in the 1800s and The Seduction was written in the 1900s. In the 1800s women tenants, like the main character in Cousin Kate had no social status and in that period of time there was no legal obligation upon a father to his child. If a woman wanted to she could stop the placement of the fathers name on he birth certificate of the child for any reason, with or without the fathers consent. If a marriage ended in the 19th Century the woman could rarely marry again because after the break-up she was viewed by other men as the cast-off of another man, and that she was not good enough for another man. And if she did marry again, the new husband would more than likely be looked down upon as a lower being than the previous husband because he took a cast-off. Cousin Kate is a bitter, remorseful poem with a strong sense of emotion and resentment whereas The Seduction is what I would call a pity-full, empathetic and sympathetic poem. Cousin Kate makes me feel sorry for the main character because of the language she uses like Now I moan, an unclean thing, who might have been a dove(Line 15). The poem The Seduction makes me want to tell the girl how silly she was to do what she did whilst under the influence of alcohol and not to realise how untrue the boys intentions. It is hinted at that the two only met on the night of the party because there is no name given, no history given and had they known each other beforehand, the girl would have been shown where the boy went when he skipped school previously. The moral of the story in The Seduction would be to be very careful of what you do when you are drunk and take things slowly. When I take into account where this all takes place I am tempted to say that this is a tragic modern tale fed by ambitions and alcohol accessibility. The moral of the story in Cousin Kate would be that life is sometimes good and it is sometimes bad and that things can change in the blink of an eye. She tries to make the reader see her point of view whilst she finds fault in her cousin, Kate. She goes into detail about how much she was attached to the lord before he changed her like a glove and this indicates to me that love can be unkind and often end in discontent with one of the people feeling used and cast-off. Eileen McAuley could also be described as a narrator as she tells us what happened from a third-person perspective. She helps us feel the sorrow of the girl seduced. Eileen McAuley writes in this poem in shocking language stated so simply, it alarms the reader although in her narrative she gives insight into the girls feelings. The content of the poem somewhat contradicts the title. The Seduction suggests to me, a planned, romantic, candlelit arrangement. But in the poem we hear of a solvent-abusing, crafty, smoking and inconsiderate young man who is selfish enough to impregnate a lady about to do important exams and leave her alone with the baby. Cousin Kate has a very definite rhythm and rhyming pattern. The pattern can be described as A, B, C, B, D, B, D, B Eileen McAuley is not governed by a rhyming pattern. She also uses conversational speech and un-poetic language.

It was made to punish criminals who stole without face to face encounters. Unlike robbery which is sometimes forced or violent. Trust issues could develop with your friends, family, school, and your community if the they are aware you are stealing. Once you lose someones trust it is very hard to earn it back. Unless they are also known for stealing then you shouldnt be friends with them in the first place. Nobody likes a thief. So if word gets around and people in your community hear about a thief around they might be suspicious of you and if anything happens they will automatically assume you were the person who did it. At school the teachers and staff will always be suspicious of you and if you do the slightest thing wrong they will not give you another chance. They may not even like you and will punish you as severely as possible. It could bring shame to any siblings you go to school with and ruin your reputation. Your family and friends will be embarrassed and ashamed to be seen with you. Nothing good could ever come of being a thief. It will only ruin your life and your future. If you are convicted of stealing and get a felony it could be really hard to find a decent job. You could spend the rest of your life barely being able to provide for yourself and your family because of a stupid mistake you made when you were young. That means I would not have the possibility of seeing a juvenile officer and discussing the incident. There are several ways to keep myself from stealing. One way is to just stop and think, nothing could be worth spending your life in jail or prison, never seeing your family or loved ones. They might not even want anything to do with you because they are so ashamed and embarrassed. Another way would be to think of how if you were caught think of how it would change how people look at you. They will look at you with disgust and some hatred and some wont even care enough to give you a look or even acknowledge you as a human. You just have to stop and ignore your impulses. With me it was just a spur of the moment thing. I know that it was wrong and I felt so stupid and embarrassed being led out of the school in handcuffs. I wonder how many people were laughing at me. I need to focus more on important things like my grades and what I need to take care of. I need to think about whats important in my life. If I ever get the urge to steal anything at all I need to think of my future, this is my last chance if I mess up again Ill be in serious trouble, no more help, no more slaps on the wrist. The consequences couldve been so much worst this time. I got really lucky and I will not let anything like this happen again. I need to think about not only how it would affect me, but the person Im stealing from. That person probably had to work hard or deserved that money. I had no right to take it from him. I didnt get mad that he told on me or get mad at the principle for kicking me out of school or even the school officer that arrested me. I was mad at myself for doing something so stupid and pointless. I would pay a lot more just to go back and stop myself from doing it. I havent ever had anything stolen from me so I dont really know how it feels but Im pretty sure I would be extremely angry and hurt. Especially if it was from one of my classmates or someone I knew. There is nothing worse than disappointing the few people who truly care and love you. I dont want to disappoint anyone anymore. I want to prove everyone wrong that has doubts about me.

Another report showed a delinquent boy has to be arrested on average thirteen times before the court will act more restrictive than probation. Laws began changing as early as 1978 in New York to try juveniles over 12 who commit violent crimes as adults did. However, even since the laws changed only twenty percent of serious offenders served any time. The decision of whether to waive a juvenile to the adult or criminal court is made in a transfer hearing. Indeed, its name is actually derived  from an older name and meaning of white-headed. The bald heads of mature bald eagles contrast sharply with their chocolate brown bodies. They have a very large, yellow, thick bill with an upper  mandible  that is strongly hooked. The bird is generally 35 to 42 inches long with a wingspan that can grow to 7 feet or more. The head, neck, and tail of bald eagles are bright, plain white, but younger birds may show spotting. Their eyes, bill, legs, and feet are yellow, and their black  talons  are thick and powerful. Buck Shreck/Getty Images Habitat and Range The bald eagles range spans from Mexico to most of Canada and it includes all of the continental U.S. They can be found in all kinds of habitats, from the bayous of Louisiana to the deserts of California to the deciduous forests of New England. It is the only sea eagle that is endemic (native) to North America. Diet and Behavior Bald eagles eat fish- and anything and everything else- but fish make up the majority of their diet. The birds have also been known to eat other water birds such as grebes, herons, ducks, coots, geese, and egrets, as well as mammals such as rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, muskrats, and even deer fawns. Turtles, terrapins, snakes, and crabs as make for tasty bald eagle snacks as well. Bald eagles have also been known to steal prey from other predators (a practice known as kleptoparasitism), to scavenge carcasses of other animals, and to steal food from landfills or campsites.  In other words, if a bald eagle can grab it in its talons, it will eat it. Reproduction and Offspring Bald eagles mate from late September to early April, depending on the region. The female lays her first egg five to 10 days after mating and incubates the eggs for about 35 days. They produce one to three eggs, which is called the clutch size. When first hatched, bald eagle chicks are covered with fluffy white down but quickly grow larger and develop mature feathers. Juvenile birds have mottled brown and white  plumage  and do not get the distinctive white head and tail until they are 4 to 5 years old when they are sexually mature and able to mate. Marcia Straub/Getty Images Threats Bald eagles today are threatened by poaching and accidental or deliberate shootings, as well as other risks to  raptors  including pollution, collisions with wind turbines or power lines, contamination of their food supplies and habitat loss.  Lead poisoning  from fishing lures and discarded bullet casings is also a grave threat to bald eagles and other large raptors. Conservation Status The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the bald eagles conservation status as least concern and says its population is increasing. However, bald eagles were severely affected by pesticides, especially DDT, which was widely used after World War II. The once-touted pesticide poisoned bald eagles and caused their eggshells to become thin, resulting in many failed nesting attempts, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. As a result of their dwindling numbers, the bald eagle was placed on the federal list of endangered species in 1967 and the California endangered species list in 1971. However, after the use of DDT was banned in the United States in 1972, strong efforts to restore these birds were successful and the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2007. In What Way Does The Final Scene of Act 1 Demonstrate Dramatically The Tensions Between The Characters Which Will Lead to Tragedy? The final scene of Act 1 in Arthur Miller's 'A View From The Bridge' demonstrates dramatic tension in a variety of different ways. It is made fairly clear from the final moments of the act when Alfieri returns to the stage that the play will end in tragedy. Miller shows this through dialogue between the characters and in the plentiful stage directions with which he liberally sprinkles the text. There is a range of conflict present in the scene. The central conflict however, involves Eddie's unacknowledged jealousy towards Rodolfo; this is the strongest. The above dispute is clearly visible when Eddie goes to visit Alfieri for the first time. He makes insubstantial claims about Rodolfo's sexual persuasion without ever calling him a homosexual. Eddie asserts to Alfieri that "the guy ain't right" and that he "ain't no tenor". He continues by adding that if one was to enter a room when Rodolfo was singing, "you wouldn't be looking for him, you'd be looking for her". He is incredulous that there is no recourse in the law that will prevent Rodolfo, a submarine or illegal immigrant, from marrying Catherine. When he leaves Alfieri's office, Eddie has made it clear he would never betray the cousins. Nevertheless the audience is made to feel that he may yet take the recurring theme of personal justice into his own hands, if not by informing the authorities of their illegal presence in the country, then by some other means. This is shown by the extent of Eddie's anger when he says "he's stealing from me" and "[he] puts his filthy hands on her like a goddam thief." Miller conveys th... ... the characters that will lead to tragedy through the way he very carefully structures the play so that the central tension, Eddie versus Rodolfo, increases as the action unfolds. This is true of the 'minor' tensions too, e.g. Beatrice versus Eddie. The tensions themselves are built up by the pithy dialogue and the meticulous stage directions, e.g. "rubbing his fists into his palms; diverting their attention; he senses he is exposing the issue and he is driven on". Miller mimics Greek tragedy with a "chorus" - Alfieri - who comments on the action. Alfieri does this job well and is constantly hinting at the tragic ending he knows is going to unfold. Ironically, after the first few scenes the audience realise that Alfieri was right at the beginning and the play is going to end in tragedy. How it will come about is still unclear at the end of Act 1, however.

Community Health Nursing Essay

As a registered nurse of only three years, I am often referred to by my peers as a â€Å"baby† nurse. However, in those short three years of practice I have learned and continue to learn many things whether medical, personal, or humanitarian. My personal nursing experience has been in surgical care services. The vast majority of the patients I have cared for are those undergoing elective procedures. They have chosen to have joint arthroplasty or some other type of procedure. I have also had the great fortune to care for those who have been diagnosed with terminal illnesses such as cancer and leukemia. Many times I see these patients in the infancy of their disease process, but I also see them on a continue basis during treatments such as blood or platelet transfusions. The difficulties faced by patient s such as these are varied and bring with each a different set of needs to be assessed and addressed. You become not just a nurse but a caregiver, advocate, therapist, and more often than not a friend. It is when working with these patients that the dynamics of quality versus quantity of life become central to care. In many cases family concerns, whether well meaning or not, may overshadow the patient’s wishes. Our selfish need to keep loved ones with us can blur the line as to the patient’s own wants and needs. In dealing with this you must also assess your own beliefs as to end of life decisions. My role as a nurse must be to advocate for my patient, to develop trust in the relationship, and to follow through with their wishes. All the while promoting compassion in our interactions,  In this case scenario, there are three strategies in which I would implement to address Mrs. Thomas as a patient. After assessing the patient and her situation referrals should be made for therapy modalities both physical and occupational, home health, and psychological/mental health for both Mrs. Thomas and her spouse/caregiver. Physical and occupational therapy could evaluate Mrs. Thomas and initiate a plan of treatment to increase stamina and range of motion to keep the patient at an optimum level of functioning. Physical improvement even in small increments can have a positive effect on the patient’s outlook. Home health could evaluate Mrs. Thomas and her need for pain control as well as her fear of dependency. Education at this juncture is imperative to patient outlook as well as outcome of treatments. With pain management in place, physical therapy could progress, thus increasing the level of patient participation. Also a mental health/psychological referral could be invaluable to both Mr. and Mrs. Thomas. Mrs. Thomas could be assisted in working through and understanding the stages of her illness, as well as her depression and sadness concerning her family relationships. It could also help Mr. Thomas with his depression and allow them both to connect with support groups or individuals within the community with whom they can share experiences. One of the best resources for breast cancer patients is the Susan B. Komen Foundation. As a certified breast cancer educator, I have had the pleasure of working with both survivors and their families. Education is very important to all concerned in a medical diagnosis of breast cancer. Understanding of the disease process and its effects are also essential to a healthy outlook. The Komen Foundation offers support to patients, survivors, caregivers, and family members. It would be an excellent resource in which both Mr. and Mrs. Thomas could receive individualized treatment and support. The team approach is also necessary for working with patients, families, and caregivers. As a nurse you must accept that an individual cannot meet all patient needs so you draw upon other health care professional s to accomplish the highest levels of care. A wide variety of team members can be utilized in the care of the Thomas’. Physicians who offer direct clinical care and disease pathologies, social workers/clinical case managers who can assist in community resources as well as their knowledge of insurances, spiritual leaders to aide in dealing with final decisions and spiritual needs of the patient and family, pharmacists  who assist with a wide array of pharmacological treatments for pain and symptom control, dieticians can be helpful in counseling with meals, nutrition, supplements, and hydration. Other team members may include physical and occupational therapy, psychologists, and perhaps even volunteers to assist in the home and with errands. The needs of Mrs. Thomas and her family will continue to fluctuate as her disease progresses. It is important for the team to stay abreast of these needs and adjust plans of care accordingly. At some point hospice services may be called upon and continued through death. This can be provided at home or on an inpatient basis. Initiating a plan of action can alleviate stress from both the Thomas’. Mr. Thomas may feel that some of the caregiver burden has been lifted and this could aid in the treatment of his depression. This in combination with medication could be the keys to initiating successful treatment. If a psychological evaluation is needed due to the possibility of suicidal ideations, then immediate intervention is warranted with a crisis facility. Especially if there is deemed eminent danger of self harm. With pieces of the clinical puzzle in place, the Thomas’ can be assisted with as much compassion, dignity, and support as possible to meet their needs in both the short and long term.

The competence, integrity and responsibility of its members, clear and fair decisions reached collectively, and effective and secure controls are the ethical principles that govern the Board. The key priorities pursued by LVMH’s Board of Directors are enterprise value creation and the defense of the Company’s interests. LVMH’s Board of Directors acts as guarantor of the rights of each of its shareholders and ensures that shareholders ful? ll all of their duties.The Company adheres to the Code of Corporate Governance for Listed Companies published by AFEP and MEDEF. The Board of Directors shall have a maximum of 18 members, a third of whom at least are appointed from among prominent independent persons with no interests in the Company The number of Directors or permanent representatives of legal entities from outside companies, shall be limited to four . The principal missions of the Committee are to: – monitor the process for preparing ? nancial information, particularly the individual company and consolidated ?nancial statements, and verify the quality of this information; – monitor the statutory audit of the individual company and consolidated ? nancial statements by the Statutory Auditors , whose conclusions and recommendations it examines; ensure the existence, pertinence, application and effectiveness of internal control and risk management systems, monitor the ongoing effectiveness of these systems, and make recommendations to the Chief Executive Of? cer concerning the priorities and general guidelines for the work of the Internal Audit team; – examine risks to the Statutory Auditors’ independence and, if necessary, identify safeguards to be put in place in order to minimize the pot ential of risks to compromise their independence, issue an opinion on the fees paid to the Statutory Auditors, as well as those paid to the network to hich they belong, by the Company and the companies it controls or is controlled by, whether in relation to their statutory audit responsibilities or other related assignments, oversee the procedure for the selection of the Company’s Statutory Auditors, and make a recommendation on the appointments to be submitted to the Shareholders’ Meeting in consideration of the results of this procedure; – analyze the exposure of the Company and the Group to risks, and in particular to those identi? ed by the internal control and risk management systems, as well as material off–balance sheet commitments of the Company and the Group; review major agreements entered into by Group companies and agreements entered into by any Group company with a third-party company in which a Director of the LVMH parent company is also a s enior executive or principal shareholder. Signi? cant operations within the scope of the provisions of Article L. 225-38 of the French Commercial Code require an opinion issued by an independent expert appointed upon the proposal of the Performance Audit Committee; – assess any instances of con? ict of interest that may affect a Director and recommend suitable measures to prevent or correct them. Compensation CommitteeThe Committee shall meet at least twice a year, without the Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Of? cer and the Group Managing Director(s), before the Board of Directors’ meetings in which the agenda includes a review of the annual and half-yearly parent company and consolidated ?nancial statements. If necessary, the Committee may be required to hold special meetings, when an event occurs that may have a signi? cant effect on the parent company or consolidated ? nancial statements. Decisions of the Committee shall be made by simple maj ority vote and shall be deemed to have been reached as a board.The proceedings of each Committee meeting shall be recorded in minutes of the meeting. The Committee shall report on its work to the Board of Directors. It shall submit to the Board its ? ndings, recommendations and suggestions. The Committee may request any and all accounting, legal or ?nancial documents it deems necessary to carry out its responsibilities. The Committee may call upon the Company’s staff members responsible for preparing the ? nancial statements, carrying out internal control procedures, conducting internal audits, applying risk management or cash management procedures, nvestigating tax or legal matters, as well as the Statutory Auditors, to appear before it on any number of occasions to address issues in detail, without requiring the presence of the Chairman of the Board, the Chief Executive Of? cer, or Group Managing Director(s) of LVMH. These meetings may also take place in the absence of thos e responsible for the accounting and ? nancial functions. Subject to the exceptions provided by law, the Board of Directors is composed of three to eighteen members, who may be individuals or legal entities appointed by the Ordinary Shareholders’ Meeting. The term of of? ce of a permanent representative is the same as the legal entity that he represents. . One or more supplementary deputy Statutory Auditors, who may be called to replace the regular Statutory Auditors in the event of death, disability, resignation or refusal to perform their duties, are appointed by the Ordinary Shareholders’ Meeting. Conflict Between US And USSR History Essay In the stressful conflict that accrued between the United States and the U.S.S.R. Was after the Second World War with Hitler. The United States and the Soviet Union In 1945 became the two leading super powers in Europe, with the USSR predominately occupying the countries of Eastern Europe. The United States was the peace keeper of the countries of Western Europe. These two superpowers, in Germany along with France and Britain, agreed on occupied areas of land which made up a framework for four-power control over Europes land mass. In the February meetings at Yalta, in July/August at Potsdam in 1945 the two superpowers and Britain negotiated to divide the states for a land territory settlement of Europe. When the Potsdam conference became serious many differences were fought over about the future evolving status of Germany and the rest of the states of Europe. Each meeting the super powers discussed the Far East They paid very close attention to the admittance of the USSR into the war against Japan. By 1947 an east-west division of states was manifesting its head with the Soviets seriously intending on undermining democracy and establishing puppet communist regimes in Eastern Europe. In Germany the Soviets were bent on crippling their economy and creating an overwhelming influence in their territory that they wanted to occupy. The Soviets defended their desires of Europe in terms of creating anti-Fascist governments which were friendly towards the USSR and her beliefs. The USSR was portraying the United States as bent on destroying communism while the United States portrayed the USSR as determined to undermining liberal democracy in the United States as well as Europe. The Cold War was marked by the Berlin Blockade Crisis of 1948-9. As time progressed the victory of Maos Red Army of the American sponsored Nationalist Government in China in 1949 and the Korean War in 1950, received pressure from the Soviet military occupation of Hungary in 1956. From Berlin on to 1958 leading up to the Wall crisis of 1961 in Berlin, Germany and the Missile Crisis in Cuba in 1962. During this time the Americans pulled their resources together and their new role as leader of the West was offering assistance to the economies of the Western European states they occupied through the implemented Marshall Plan of 1947. Recently allied to an emerging alliance of Western European states America signed the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949; taking the lead in controlling the Federal Republic of Germany from the three Western zones that were occupied in 1949. In the early 1950s America worked for rearming of these new states and its full membership in North Atlantic Treaty Organization during the year 1955. The USSR proclaimed its territories in Germany as the German Democratic Republic completely created a formal alliance with its Eastern European new friends in 1955 which created the Warsaw Pact Treaty Organization. The Americans concluded an alliance in Asia making a peace treaty with Japan in 1951 and 1952 and included other states such as Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and the Philippines, within a series of alliances, while the USSR finished an alliance with China in 1950. but the Americans gradually became entangled in a more complex war in Vietnam while the war in Korea ended in 1953 in which it supported the South Vietnam against North Vietnam which the north was backed by the USSR and China. Throughout this era the two countries made policies of rearming of nuclear weapons with continued developed of long-range weapons where they could destroy each other from their own countries. The Cuban Missile Crisis relations got much better after the agreements were finished in stabilizing the situations in Europe. The Quadripartite Agreement from Berlin in 1971 led to the two German states entering the United Nations in 1973. The Helsinki Accords agreed the Co-operation in Europe in 1975 which appeared to mark a tacit peace treaty to end the Cold War and World War II by the Conference on Security. Agreements that limited the nuclear arms race were also finished. The conflict between the superpowers kept on going even through this era of this easing, as of tension between competitors. Even in new areas of rivalry such as was in Africa crossed its Continent while the betterment of relations continued between China and, the United States with the added work of President Nixon, the Secretary of State Kissinger, and Premier Chou En-Lai. Together they eased the tensions between the United States and the USSR worsening the relations between her and China. This gave a new shap e to negotiations towards peace between the two superpowers in the 1970s. By the mid-1970s the Cold War in its original form can be said to have died away. The arms race between East and West had all the characteristics of a classic action-reaction model of international conflict in which each side reacts to an earlier step by the other side. The explanation of the origins of the conflict is more complex, though three broad categories of explanation can be identified. First, some analysts have emphasized that the Cold War occurred primarily as a result of the destruction of German power, the resulting power vacuum in Central Europe and the new bipolar balance of power between the superpowers. From this perspective, the Cold War was a traditional great power conflict in which ideological rivalry was essentially secondary and the structural constraints of bipolarity crucial in throwing the two sides apart. A second explanation, sometimes called the orthodox or liberal interpretation, stresses the American desire for a return to a much more limited internatio nal role after the Second World War. However, after having begun to disarm and disengage from Europe, the Americans were obliged by Soviet expansionism in Eastern Europe to take up in 1947 a much more active, and unsought for, role in Europe in order to contain Soviet power. A third explanation stresses the long-term objective of the American capitalist power to undermine communism and to expand American power throughout the Middle East, the Far East, and all of Europe. Some writers in this category thus trace the Cold War back to American opposition to the 1917 Russian Revolution. Of course, many accounts weave together two or even all three of these broad categories. In the 1980s there was a short-lived but intensive reawakening of the Cold War, sometimes called the New Cold War. DÃ ©tente petered out in the late 1970s, arms control faltered, and in December 1979 the Soviet Union occupied Afghanistan. From the year 1980 onward the USSR exerted intense pressure over the government of Poland. In the United States Reagan denounced the Soviet Union in ideological terms and in Britain Thatcher denounced the Soviet Union in ideological terms which was unheard of since the worst days of the Cold War. On the Western side there was rearmament in Europe, under the so-called double-track policy of NATO, changes in the American doctrine of deterrence which appeared to emphasize the political utility of limited nuclear war, and the American pursuit of defenses against Soviet missiles in the Strategic Defense Initiative. In the post-year 1945 era it was difficult to disentangle action and reaction between the two sides. In any case, by 1987 the two superpower s had moved decisively back towards a better agreement on treaties by 1989 while Soviet power itself had crumbled. The US and Russian agreements needed to work together against terrorism after September 11, 2001 which marked the most dramatic change in their relations since the start of the Cold War in 1948. The imploded views of the socialists in Europe in 1989 started this new European order. Germany was brought back together, healing the pain and suffering along Europes heart and soul. This time in history that has been described as the Cold War, needed to be ended. Soviet spokesperson Gennadi Gerasimov stated, this era of conflict had last from Yalta to Malta, a reference to the time between the famous 1945 summit and a brief conference with the U.S. President George Bush including Gorbachev off the coast of the neutral island of Malta in December 1989. Latter at a summit, Gorbachev announced the end of an era and the start of a new one, a lasting and peaceful one, promising that he would never start a hot war against the United States. Bush said, that he looked forward to enduring cooperation. The real end to the period would come two years later, when the Soviet Union ceased to exist. (Freedman, L. 2010)
